Taking UofM's online nursing programs from Alaska
Alaska puts one extra step on nurse practitioner students from other states: the Board of Nursing registers each of them, one by one, before precepted hours begin. Where Alaska sits in UofM's paperwork
Two UofM documents disagree here. The Office of Community Partnerships and Practice names 16 states where the college calls itself authorized today, and Alaska is missing. The MSN licensure disclosure, written to answer a narrower licensing question, marks Alaska Yes for FNP, AG-ACNP and PMHNP alike.

Alaska licenses the student, one registration at a time
Alaska's approach is personal: the Board clears each learner, not the school. Under 12 AAC 44.460, any UofM student or other APRN learner whose program is based elsewhere must hold a Board registration for the preceptorship, requested on form 08-4253 (the fee is not refunded), before clinical work in Alaska starts.
What goes with the application
- Evidence that your RN license, from any US state including Alaska, is in good standing
- Proof from the program that you are enrolled in APRN study now
- The signed preceptorship arrangement binding UofM, the clinic or hospital, your preceptor and you
A registration runs out when the preceptorship closes or a year passes, if that comes sooner, and Alaska allows a single renewal. Practicums that stretch beyond twelve months need that renewal on the calendar from the start.
License, preceptor and practice rules on the ground
Alaska is not a compact state; the Board reports that this session's bills to change that were still pending. A multistate license issued in Tennessee therefore carries no Alaska privilege. UofM wants you eligible to practice as an RN in Tennessee or in the approved state hosting your clinicals, so settle the license question with LCON and the Board together.
Your preceptor may be an APRN or a physician with an active license or privilege to practice, carrying no encumbrance, in a focus close to yours, who supervises, teaches and evaluates you directly. On AANP's map, Alaska NPs have full practice authority. Care centers on Anchorage, home to roughly 406,000 residents, with smaller hubs in Fairbanks and Juneau. Among the systems there: Foundation Health Partners, which runs Fairbanks Memorial; Mat-Su Regional Medical Center in Palmer; Providence; HCA's Alaska Regional Hospital; and the tribal system's Anchorage hub, Alaska Native Medical Center.
Flights to Memphis for intensives

Can I enroll in UofM's online FNP program while living in Alaska?
The answer depends on which UofM page you read. The partnerships office leaves Alaska off its authorized list, while the MSN disclosure marks it Yes. Get a written answer on Alaska from the Loewenberg College of Nursing before applying.
Which RN license do I need for UofM clinicals in Alaska?
For its student registration, the Board accepts a good-standing RN license issued by Alaska or by any other state. UofM asks for RN eligibility in Tennessee or the approved state where clinicals happen. With Alaska outside the compact, have LCON and the Board tell you which license your practicum requires.
Does Alaska approve UofM as a school?
Alaska's APRN rule is built around the student, not the program: the Board registers you on your license, enrollment and preceptorship arrangement. Whether UofM may teach Alaska residents at all is a separate matter for LCON.
Will UofM faculty need an Alaska license to supervise my clinicals?
Possibly. Rule 12 AAC 44.090(h) sets a threshold of 20 working days: once a visiting instructor's Alaska clinical grading, plus any other nursing teaching there, runs past that within a licensing period, UofM's instructor would need Alaska licensure. Raise Alaska with LCON early.
What if I move to Alaska partway through the program?
Talk to LCON before you relocate. Alaska is off the partnerships office list, and the move reshapes your license, Board registration and practicum plan together. No Alaska clinical hour counts before registration.
