A UofM student in the state's largest metro
UofM's MSN runs fully online, and its precepted practicums take place in the student's home area. For a nurse in Davidson, Williamson, Rutherford or Sumner County, that means clinical hours in Middle Tennessee and trips west only for the NP intensives.
Staying in Tennessee keeps the license question short. An unrestricted Tennessee RN license satisfies UofM for a Nashville practice, as does a compact multistate license issued elsewhere, and no second state's oversight is involved.
What stays constant is UofM's approval path. Your preceptor agreement form needs the partnerships office's sign-off ahead of the opening clinical day, and faculty review your schedule in the first weeks of term. How Middle Tennessee systems handle outside students
Consider these systems as examples of where clinicians in the Nashville area practice, based on each one's public pages. What they publish are general student routes, not arrangements with any particular school.
- Vanderbilt Health runs clinical rotations through school affiliation agreements and posts yearly student placement guidelines. Where a school has none, it is the school's clinical coordinator who opens a request.
- HCA TriStar Health publishes nurse residency and professional development pages, but no NP student placement page was found.
- Ascension Saint Thomas has no confirmed Tennessee student placement page on its own site.
The Vanderbilt pattern is typical of large systems: the agreement sits between the school and the system, and a student cannot open one alone. So we confirm a system's route before spending your time on one of its clinicians, and we look beyond the big systems to independent and community practices across the region.
Preceptor demand and Tennessee's rules
The Tennessee Board of Nursing's own school list, dated February 2026, includes many out-of-state graduate programs approved to operate or place students in Tennessee, so a Nashville practice may field requests from students of many programs. That is the clinical-placement scarcity Middle Tennessee students meet, and a strong first request matters.
Tennessee's 2026 moratorium legislation halts fresh approvals of programs from other states for two years, with an exemption for programs based in Tennessee. Because UofM's home is Memphis, the pause does not reach its students; the Tennessee NP practice guide has the details.
State rules shape the preceptor side too. Tennessee NPs prescribe under a certificate of fitness and work with a collaborating physician, and the board wants each preceptor licensed, without encumbrance, at the student's target level or higher in the state where the teaching happens.
The January intensive and your spring practicum
Both UofM campuses are in West Tennessee, and the pages that list the NP intensives do not say which one hosts them. Either way, a Nashville student heads west up to three times in the program, for one-to-three-day sessions posted six or more months in advance.
No NP track may skip the January 2027 session, which lands at the very start of the spring term. Spring is also when each NP track's first precepted practicum begins, so the first clinical schedule you hand clinical faculty, due by Monday of the second week, has to account for the days you spend on campus.

Track fit in Middle Tennessee

NURS 7649residency set in family practice or internal medicine, where the Track Coordinator can approve up to 60 specialty hours. - AG-ACNP: preceptors whose practice includes inpatient care, across clinic, hospital and critical care settings. AG-ACNP students also keep ACLS current for the whole program.
- PMHNP: psychiatric experience on both the outpatient and inpatient side, one rotation of it under an NP.

Do Nashville students have to travel to Memphis for clinicals?
Precepted hours are meant to happen near where you live, so Middle Tennessee students train in Middle Tennessee. Campus travel is for the NP intensives: up to three short sessions across the program. UofM's pages do not name the host campus, and both campuses sit in West Tennessee.
Which RN license covers UofM clinicals in Nashville?
Your Tennessee RN license covers them, provided it stays unrestricted for the whole program. A multistate license from a nurse's compact home state works too, since Tennessee is in the compact. UofM's other option, a license from the approved state where the clinicals happen, points back to Tennessee for any Nashville site.
Could my Nashville employer host my practicum?
Rarely. UofM keeps practicum hours out of the place you currently work, with an exception only for compelling circumstances that faculty and program administration approve and document. A practice run by a different employer is the usual answer, and we search those for you across Middle Tennessee.
How early should a Middle Tennessee NP student start the search?
Start well before your first precepted practicum, which arrives in a spring term: roughly a year in for Spring starters and about 17 months in for Fall starters. What if my Nashville preceptor leaves partway through a term?
Tell your clinical faculty right away. Moving to a new site takes written sign-off from your clinical faculty and from the clinical coordinator, and a clinical day without faculty approval could get you dismissed from the course.
