Reach the placement desk

Two routes lead to the Memphis Preceptor placement desk: the message form on this page and the chat window that opens from any page on the site. Share your UofM track, the practicum you are preparing for and your home area, and your placement advisor comes back with a plan built on all three.

Send the placement desk a message

Name your UofM track, your next practicum and your town. Your placement advisor takes it from there.

Form or chat: which to use

Use the form when you are ready for real planning. Pick your UofM program from the dropdown, describe your situation in the message field, and your placement advisor starts sketching the timeline before writing back. Searches, quotes and plans that cover several practicums in a row all begin here.

Use chat for something quick: whether we cover your track, where the preceptor agreement form sits in UofM's sequence, or what to do on the day a preceptor cancels. If a chat turns into a placement request, your advisor picks it up with the chat history in hand, so you only tell your story once.

Both routes reach the same placement desk, and both are open to students and clinicians alike.

Details that speed up the first reply

The more your first message covers, the sooner the reply can move from questions to a plan. These six details do the most work.

  • Your concentration or certificate: FNP, AG-ACNP, PMHNP, Nursing Education or Nursing Leadership.
  • Your next practicum by course number, for example NURS 7643 or NURS 7612, and the term it runs.
  • Your home town and a realistic driving limit for clinical days.
  • Your current employer, since UofM generally keeps a student's workplace off the list of practicum sites.
  • Clinicians or practices you have contacted already, with the outcome of each.
  • Your DISA Complio status, plus any item close to its expiry date.

Hold back personal documents for now. Your placement advisor requests a specific item only at the step that needs it.

From first message to active search

Every request follows the same short path, and you decide when it moves from planning to searching. Nothing is arranged on your behalf until you have seen the plan and agreed to it.

  1. A first replyYour placement advisor writes back with an initial view of your timeline, built from your course and term, along with anything that still needs clarifying.
  2. A planning conversationYou settle the course requirements together: the rotation rule the placement must satisfy, the setting it calls for and the dates that cannot move.
  3. A plan and a quoteA search plan arrives with a quote written for your program and timing; the factors behind it are on our cost page.
  4. The searchWhen you say go, the search begins, following the stages described on our how it works page.

Urgent? Put the date up front

Start your message with your first clinical date and the word urgent. Three situations account for most urgent requests, and each has a guide worth reading while your reply is on its way.

No preceptor with the term approaching: need a preceptor fast lays out the UofM checkpoints still ahead of you and the steps that can overlap. A preceptor who withdrew: preceptor dropped out begins with written notice to your clinical faculty and explains the rotation rule a replacement inherits. A gap in hours partway through a course: our catch-up guide shows how to measure the shortfall and which fixes faculty can approve. If your clinical faculty have already told you what they expect from a replacement or a catch-up plan, include that as well.

Clinicians who want to teach

Clinicians interested in teaching a UofM nursing student reach the same desk. Choose the preceptor entry, the last item in the program dropdown, and tell us your specialty, your practice's town and which weekdays suit a learner in your clinic. If you have hosted students from other programs, mention it, since that experience helps us pick the right course for you.

Your placement advisor then learns which UofM practicum courses fit your setting, whether that is FNP primary care, AG-ACNP inpatient work or PMHNP psychiatric care, and plans a schedule around the rhythm of your practice. The agreement details are prepared for you, so your time goes to teaching. Our preceptor page covers the role from the agreement form through evaluation.

Questions only UofM can settle

Some answers have to come from the college itself, and we help you frame them clearly. The Office of Community Partnerships and Practice approves preceptor agreement forms, clinical faculty approve schedules and clinical days, and your track coordinator and faculty advisor decide questions about your plan of study, hour totals and progression.

Take those conversations through UofM's official channels. The college treats your UofM email account as its formal line of communication, and LCON's Scrub Hub form collects student questions and concerns. Our guide to clinical roles at LCON shows which title handles what, and the student systems guide covers myMemphis, umMail and Canvas. Unsure which office to ask? Send us the question first, and your placement advisor will suggest where it belongs.

Questions UofM students ask

When can I expect a reply?

The placement desk reads every message, and requests with a near-term clinical start move to the top of the queue. Putting your first clinical date and course number in the message lets your placement advisor answer with a plan rather than a list of questions. For a short question, chat tends to get you an answer soonest.

Is it worth writing before my UofM program begins?

Yes. In every UofM nurse practitioner track the first precepted practicum lands in a Spring term, so knowing your start term lets the search be planned well in advance. Admitted students and applicants still comparing programs are both welcome to write, and an early conversation gives the search the most room to work.

May I ask something without committing to a search?

Certainly. Ask about any part of UofM's clinical process through chat or the form, from the agreement form to the rotation rules for your track. A search starts only when you choose to begin one, and your placement advisor takes you through the plan and the quote before anything moves.

What happens to the details I send?

They are used to plan your placement and answer your questions, as our privacy policy sets out. Your first message only needs your program, course, term, town and clinical timeline. Specific documents come later, and only when a step in the process calls for them.

I am a BSN student. Should I contact you?

You are welcome to. UofM assigns clinical placements to its Traditional and Accelerated BSN students, so questions from those programs usually concern clearance or timing, and we are glad to point you to the right step. RN to BSN students can ask about their community health course as well.

Last checked 2026-09-27

We check these pages against UofM's 2026-27 catalog, the LCON Academic Bulletin, program pages and licensure disclosures. Your clinical faculty and your plan of study have the final word.

Whether UofM helps or you start alone, we find the preceptor.

Tell us your UofM concentration, your next practicum and the town you train near. We find preceptors and sites that fit the course and prepare what the preceptor agreement form needs, early enough for approval before the first clinical day.

  • Preceptors matched to the rotation rules: an NP preceptor, family practice for FNP, inpatient and critical care for AG-ACNP
  • License, certification and site details ready for the preceptor agreement form, with your Complio items in order
  • Across the Mid-South, Tennessee and the states UofM serves
