Each of those organizations sets its own terms for students from outside programs, and every match also has to satisfy UofM's rotation rules and clear the Office of Community Partnerships and Practice. Home city, same approval path
Living a few miles from the Community Health Building does not shorten UofM's process. The MSN is taught online, with practicum hours meant to happen in each student's own community, so a Memphis student's hours take place in Memphis clinics, hospitals and health centers, under the same rules every UofM student follows.
Day one cannot arrive until LCON's partnerships office has reviewed and approved a completed preceptor agreement form. Your clinical faculty then need your clinical schedule by Monday of the term's second week. Site approval in myClinicalExchange also holds until the site's required training and documents are all accepted.

What Memphis health systems publish about outside students
The organizations below are examples of where Memphis clinicians practice. Their public pages describe general rules for students from outside programs, and listing them here says nothing about whether any site will host you.

Two patterns matter most. Baptist's form expects the preceptor to be named before anything is filed, and Regional One's route depends on an agreement at the school level. We work out which pattern applies before proposing any Memphis site.
Christ Community's deadlines against UofM's calendar
Christ Community Health Services publishes the most specific student calendar in Memphis, so if one of its clinicians is on your shortlist, that calendar sets the pace. It requires an application for every rotation, shadowing included, and its medical education committee meets about two weeks after each deadline, with answers roughly a month after that.

Fitting your track in Shelby County
Memphis has settings for every UofM track, but each match has to follow the rules for yours, and we sort candidates against them first.
- FNP: a family practice rotation and an NP-precepted rotation, each at least once, plus a residency (
NURS 7649) in family practice or internal medicine. Up to 60 residency hours may go to a specialty with the Track Coordinator's approval. - AG-ACNP: a preceptor whose practice includes inpatient care, with clinic, hospital or critical care settings across the practicums, and at least one NP-precepted rotation.
- PMHNP: outpatient and inpatient psychiatric settings across four practicums, again with at least one NP preceptor.
- Nursing Education and Nursing Leadership: two immersions, and Education students choose a new site for the residency instead of returning to an earlier one.
Many Memphis nurses already work inside the systems above. UofM keeps practicum hours out of your current workplace unless there are compelling circumstances that faculty and program administration approve and document; the workplace clinicals guide explains that rule, and the full list sits under preceptor and rotation rules.
Where Memphis patients face access gaps
Federal shortage-area designations show where Memphis patients have the hardest time reaching primary care. HRSA's September 2026 files list low-income primary care designations for South Memphis and Orange Mound, North Memphis and Hollywood, Oakville, Parkway Village and Fox Meadows, Frayser and Raleigh, Whitehaven and Westwood, and Macon Mullins Station.
Three community health centers carry facility designations of their own: Christ Community Health Services, Memphis Health Center and Tri State Community Health Center. For an FNP student, a family practice serving these neighborhoods still has to meet UofM's setting rules, and it brings a patient panel that shows access need up close. A designation describes patient access, though, not how open a practice is to students, so each organization's own student steps still apply.

Questions UofM students ask
Can I do a practicum at Church Health?
Church Health's own internship page says it has no opportunities for graduate nursing students or other clinic-based practicums, so it is not a route for precepted NP or immersion hours. We search the city's other primary care and community settings against your track's rules instead.
Can I complete Memphis clinical hours at my own hospital?
Usually not. UofM keeps practicum hours out of a student's current workplace unless there are compelling circumstances, an exception that also needs faculty and program administration to approve and document it. If your employer runs several sites around Memphis, ask clinical faculty how the rule applies before planning around one of them.
When should a Memphis NP student begin the preceptor search?
Count backward from your first practicum, which falls in a spring term for every UofM NP track: about a year after a Spring start, or some 17 months after a Fall start. Baptist Memorial wants graduate applications three months ahead, and Christ Community's spring deadline is mid-July, so begin the summer before.
Is a Tennessee RN license required for Memphis clinicals?
Not necessarily a Tennessee-issued one. UofM wants your RN license unrestricted and valid where the clinicals happen, which for Memphis means Tennessee, and a compact multistate license from your home state qualifies because Tennessee is in the compact. The RN license guide has the details.
What does Regional One require before a student arrives?
Regional One Health's affiliate school page says every experience other than shadowing and tours, preceptorships and clinical rotations included, needs an affiliation agreement signed and executed before arrival. Questions go to its Clinical Placement Coordinator, who aims to reply within 48 business hours. The page gives no NP-specific steps or lead time.
