DISA Complio at UofM: the health record behind every practicum

Complio is the online health-data system the Loewenberg College of Nursing asks you to set up as soon as you are admitted. It holds the records that clear you for clinical work, from immunizations and your BLS card to the yearly background check, and every date in it has to stay valid for the whole rotation it covers.

What Complio is and when your account starts

The 2026-27 LCON Academic Bulletin puts it plainly: "Upon admission to LCON, students must purchase an account with an online health data management system (DISA Complio)." The account is yours, it stays with you through the whole plan of study, and it is where LCON looks when it decides whether your health data is complete.

Complio is not only a graduate tool. The bulletin's BSN section and its MSN clinical policies both send immunizations, background checks and drug screens through it, so undergraduate and graduate students keep their records in the same system. The spring 2025 edition of the bulletin went further and said the health screening and background check themselves are bought through Complio.

The sign-up is the easy part; timing is what matters. The RN to BSN page asks for health data the semester before the first clinical course. NP students reach their first precepted practicum in a Spring term, about 12 months after a Spring start or 17 after a Fall start, so aim for a complete, current file well before that January. The first clinical course guide sets out that timing program by program.

What LCON expects on file before a graduate practicum

The graduate clinical requirements on pages 98 and 99 of the bulletin are the list your Complio record is built around. Background checks, drug screens and immunizations are uploaded to Complio directly. For the other items, check your Complio requirements and your course's Canvas site to see where each one is submitted.

The graduate list, in UofM's order

  • Three LCON forms: the Physical Exam Form, the Student Signature Form, and the Release of Student Information and Acknowledgement Form.
  • An RN license with no restrictions, held in Tennessee or in the approved state where your clinicals happen. The RN license guide covers the compact and out-of-state licenses.
  • Proof of current health insurance and a government-issued photo ID.
  • A current BLS Healthcare Provider card from the American Heart Association.
  • Immunizations and a yearly TB test, detailed in immunizations and BLS.
  • A criminal background check each year and a drug screen before each fall and spring practicum, covered in background check and drug screen.

Malpractice coverage belongs to the same list, but LCON obtains and maintains that policy itself; see malpractice coverage. AG-ACNP students have one more card to track: ACLS, which the graduate catalog requires them to hold throughout their studies.

Renewal dates have to outlast the rotation

A document that is valid on your first clinical day can still break UofM's rule. The bulletin says "renewal dates must extend beyond the full placement period," so a BLS card that expires in March is a problem for a Spring 2027 practicum that runs to April 28. Renew it before the rotation begins, not halfway through.

The consequences are concrete. LCON may place a registration hold when documents lapse, and the bulletin treats "any absence from clinical or lab sessions due to document expiration" as unexcused. It also states that "Permits will not be issued to any student with incomplete health data." Separately, a clinical absence without approval fails the course automatically, which is why a lapsed item is worth fixing early.

Check every expiration date against the last day of the practicum, not the first.

Complio and myClinicalExchange are two different gates

Students often treat these as one system, and they are not. Complio is LCON's record of your health data and screening, and it governs holds and clinical permits. HealthStream myClinicalExchange is where a clinical partner's own requirements live: that site's orientation modules, the documents it wants to see, and its approval status.

In practice, a complete Complio record is the starting point and myClinicalExchange is the site-by-site step that follows. A site clears you only after its training and documents are finished and accepted, even when your Complio file is complete. The myClinicalExchange guide walks through that side.

One older UofM page names a different tool

Search UofM's site and you may find the MSN Required Documents page telling students to maintain requirements in a different tracking system, and the spring 2025 bulletin listed that system next to Complio. The 2026-27 Academic Bulletin, last updated in August 2026, names DISA Complio and HealthStream myClinicalExchange for compliance and nothing else.

Treat the current bulletin as the rule and the older page as out of date, but confirm before buying a second account. Your course's Canvas site and the Student Academic Coordinator for Graduate Programs can tell you which tools your term uses. The student systems guide covers UofM's other accounts.

Coming back after time away

Your Complio record keeps aging while you are away. The bulletin warns that anyone back after a semester or longer away may have to repeat the background check and drug screen, and every annual item keeps counting down during the break. UofM expects MSN students to register each fall and spring; skipping one of those terms calls for a readmission form, and skipping two in a row means applying again.

If you are coming back for a residency or a delayed practicum, rebuild the file from the practicum's end date backward: what expires before then, what needs a fresh result, and what the new site adds during onboarding.

How we keep your Complio file ready for placement

UofM's clinical faculty and the Office of Community Partnerships and Practice give the final approvals, and our work makes sure what reaches them is complete and on time. Whatever part UofM plays in your search, you get a preceptor and clinical site near home that suit your UofM course, plus a compliance timeline built around that site's start date.

That timeline is a dated list of every Complio item measured against the last day of your practicum, with the drug screen window marked, the preceptor's credentials ready for the agreement form, and the site's onboarding lined up in myClinicalExchange. Lose a preceptor and we source a replacement, then re-check your dates against the new site. Tell us about your practicum and we will start from your first clinical term.

Questions UofM students ask

Do I set up Complio myself, or does UofM do it?

You set it up. The bulletin says students purchase a DISA Complio account upon admission to LCON, and the account stays with you through the program. LCON reviews what you upload, may place a hold when items lapse, and issues clinical permits only once your health data is complete, so treat the account as something you keep current all year.

Can I start clinical hours while a Complio item is still pending?

Plan on no. UofM issues no clinical permit while health data is incomplete, a site is not approved until its required training and documents are accepted, and practicing clinically before clinical faculty sign off is grounds for dismissal from the course. Upload early enough that review time never reaches into your first scheduled clinical week.

Do UofM BSN students use Complio too?

Yes. The bulletin's BSN section also directs students to Complio for health and compliance records, and BSN students then complete onboarding in myClinicalExchange for the facility where they are placed. For BSN students, the college itself makes the clinical assignments, weighing enrollment, faculty resources and open site capacity.

Is there a deadline for uploading documents before an MSN practicum?

UofM publishes no single upload date for graduate practicums. What it does publish is the end point: health data complete before permits are issued, site training and documents accepted before approval, and the preceptor agreement form approved before the first clinical day. Ask your clinical faculty or track coordinator about any internal cutoff your term uses.

Where do I find the LCON forms that go in Complio?

The Physical Exam Form, Student Signature Form and Release of Student Information and Acknowledgement Form are named in the Academic Bulletin's graduate clinical requirements, and LCON's current-students page links the college's forms. If one is missing from your Complio requirements, ask the Student Academic Coordinator for Graduate Programs which version to use.
