UofM nursing students who live in Illinois
Illinois asks more of a UofM student than most states: it stands apart from the nurse compact, and its rules require paperwork from schools based elsewhere before their students train there. Before any of that, settle enrollment. Illinois is missing from the partnerships office's 16-state list, while UofM's licensure disclosure answers yes, and only LCON can reconcile the two for you.

Your Illinois RN license comes first
Nurse licensing in Illinois runs through IDFPR, the state regulator that houses the Board of Nursing. Illinois has never signed on to the multistate compact, and no bill to change that is moving, so a compact license from Tennessee or a neighbor state does not open Illinois to you.
For local practicums, that settles the license piece. UofM asks that you be eligible to work as an RN in Tennessee or in the approved state where clinicals happen, and Illinois rotations call for an Illinois license. The state's nursing act does let RNs licensed elsewhere practice within a graduate program located in Illinois, but UofM's program is based in Memphis (RN license guide).
AANP files Illinois under reduced practice, largely because of physician collaboration requirements in certain settings and added conditions on prescribing some controlled substances.
The Board's filing rule for schools outside Illinois
Illinois rule 1300.340(n) describes a packet that any nursing school outside the state files with the Board before placing students in Illinois clinical settings:
- proof of its standing with its own state board, through approval or accreditation
- a cover letter with dates, agencies and units
- each course syllabus involved
- a signed contract for every facility
- faculty credentials and preceptor paperwork
Board approval runs for a two-year term that can be renewed, annual reports follow, and the program's faculty need Illinois RN licenses. The rule lives among the provisions for RN programs and says nothing about graduate or APRN study, so ask LCON how it handles Illinois practicums before you count on one.

Preceptors and practicum sites around Illinois
UofM pairs online courses with in-person practicums close to home. For an Illinois student that could be anywhere from Chicagoland to Peoria and Rockford, or the Metro East counties across the river from St. Louis. Names like Northwestern Medicine, UChicago Medicine, OSF HealthCare, Endeavor Health and Advocate show the size of the market; none is offered here as a UofM site.
Illinois also sets expectations for staff preceptors inside a facility. Each one is approved and oriented by program faculty, remains available whenever the student sees patients, and is licensed as an RN in the state where the student trains. UofM adds its own standard of at least one NP-precepted rotation in every NP track (rotation rules).
Illinois APRNs who precept also bank renewal credit: each academic term spent with an APRN student is worth 10 continuing education hours, capped at 30 in a renewal cycle, on the school's documentation.

Questions UofM students ask
Does a multistate license from a neighboring state cover Illinois clinicals?
No. Illinois requires its own license, and compact privileges from other states stop at its border. If you live near St. Louis and could train on either bank of the Mississippi, the state you pick sets the license you need; the Missouri guide covers the other side.
Does the Illinois out-of-state program rule apply to UofM's NP tracks?
The rule's wording never mentions NP or graduate programs, and it is filed with the approval standards for RN programs. Treat coverage as possible. Raise it with LCON early, because the Illinois filing depends on documents such as a signed facility contract and preceptor forms that take time to gather.
Will LCON accept an applicant living in Illinois?
The partnerships office names 16 states, and Illinois is not among them. UofM's disclosures for the MSN and NP certificates call Illinois a state where the program meets requirements, and UofM Global points to SARA. With UofM's sources split, have LCON confirm Illinois before you submit an application.
What does an Illinois APRN gain from precepting?
Beyond the satisfaction of teaching, Illinois gives a practical return: an academic term spent guiding an APRN student counts toward the continuing education an APRN needs at license renewal. The school supplies the documentation, which makes precepting a straightforward way to earn those hours.
