Licensing in a state outside the compact
Michigan RN licenses are issued through LARA, the state's licensing department, for the Michigan Board of Nursing. A bill to join the compact, HB 4246, is pending, but for now multistate status earned in Tennessee or elsewhere stops at the Michigan line. UofM's MSN wants your RN license to be good in Tennessee or in whichever approved state hosts your clinical work, and for Michigan rotations that points to a Michigan license.
Michigan attaches three conditions to a new license. Applicants clear a criminal background check, complete a single session on spotting human trafficking victims, and log two hours of implicit bias training inside the five-year window before the license is granted. UofM expects licensure settled before the program starts, so schedule those early.
What Michigan's board says about out-of-state programs
Research located no Michigan rule or guidance obliging programs from other states to obtain approval, or send notice, ahead of clinical rotations in the state. Michigan's program-approval rules concern schools physically in Michigan, and for licensure purposes the board recognizes schools elsewhere by their ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation. CCNE accredits UofM's MSN and post-graduate APRN certificates through June 2030.
One board rule doubles as a screening tool. In Michigan, an NP's specialty certification rests on two credentials held at once, a current Michigan RN license alongside board-accepted national certification, so ask any Michigan NP you approach to precept for both.
Detroit, Grand Rapids and the rest of the state
AANP groups Michigan with its restricted practice states, since physician delegation governs NP prescribing of controlled substances. Greater Detroit, the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro, dwarfs the rest at about 4.39 million people in 2025 federal estimates; Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood follows near 1.18 million, then Lansing-East Lansing and Flint.
Trinity Health Michigan, Michigan Medicine, Henry Ford Health, Corewell Health and McLaren Health Care sit among the largest systems, cited only as a picture of the market. On incentives, a completed MDHHS pilot for clinical preceptors, built with Michigan State University's College of Nursing, served only that school's students, and research found nothing resembling a Michigan preceptor tax break.

Will my Tennessee nursing license work for clinicals in Michigan?
Not on its own. Michigan is not a compact member, so multistate status from Tennessee or any other member state brings no practice privilege there. Does Michigan make UofM register before I train there?
No such rule turned up in research. The approval rules address schools located in Michigan, while schools from elsewhere gain recognition for licensing through national accreditation. Clinical sites keep their own intake requirements, so confirm current expectations with LCON and with the site before your start date.
Is Michigan on UofM's list of authorized states?
It is missing from the partnerships office's list of 16, yet the licensure disclosures for the MSN and certificates mark Michigan yes on every NP track, and UofM Global points to NC-SARA reach across 49 states. Who can precept a UofM student in Michigan?
UofM requires at least one rotation with an NP preceptor, and Michigan certifies an NP only with both a current state RN license and a recognized national certification in hand. UofM's public pages list no further preceptor qualifications, so your clinical faculty confirm fit. Every preceptor still goes through the agreement form before your first day.
