How each UofM program reads for Mississippi
Mississippi is one of the simpler states on UofM's map, because the college's short list of authorized states and its licensure disclosures both include it.

Mississippi's review of programs based elsewhere
Two bodies share nursing oversight in Mississippi. Nurse licensure, along with approval of practical nursing schools, belongs to the Mississippi Board of Nursing. For RN programs the standard-setter is IHL, the state's higher education trustees, and IHL holds undergraduate and graduate programs from other states that offer clinical experiences in Mississippi to those same standards.
In IHL's view, a practicum held in Mississippi gives the program a physical presence in the state. The consequence is a program review by IHL's nursing education office, which can stretch to three months, plus either SARA participation or non-SARA distance authorization through MCCA. IHL's manual wants schools controlled from outside Mississippi to file for that review at least four months early.

Your license, and how Mississippi NPs practice
Mississippi belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact. The Mississippi board explains that a nurse in good standing can use a multistate license from the declared home state throughout compact territory, and employers may not insist on a remote-state license. IHL also requires APRN clinical students to be licensed as RNs, without encumbrance, in whichever state hosts their clinicals, which matches UofM's own rule of an unrestricted license valid where your clinicals happen.
On the AANP's scale Mississippi is a reduced practice state: NPs there practice alongside a collaborating physician or dentist who holds a Mississippi license, under terms the board approves. No APRN Compact applies there yet, so NP licensure after graduation follows each state's own process. The RN license guide has UofM's exact requirements.
Clinicals near home, from DeSoto County to the coast
The Mississippi share of the Memphis metro is about 278,000 people, centered on DeSoto County. Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto and Methodist Le Bonheur's Olive Branch hospital sit on that side of the state line, and the same Memphis-based Baptist system operates Mississippi Baptist Medical Center down in Jackson.
Farther south lie the Jackson, Mississippi metro, home to roughly 610,000 people, the Gulfport-Biloxi area at around 431,000 and Hattiesburg at close to 158,000. Forrest Health, Singing River Health System, UMMC and North Mississippi Health Services are four of the state's big systems, named only as examples of where Mississippi NPs work.
Around DeSoto, low-income primary care designations cover Marshall, Tate and Tunica counties, while DeSoto itself has no active shortage designation. The north Mississippi guide goes county by county.
Crossing into Memphis for clinicals and intensives
For a DeSoto County student, the nearest suitable site may be in Memphis rather than Mississippi. A multistate RN license from the Mississippi board covers registered nurse practice in Tennessee, and clinical faculty approve any site, whichever side of the line it sits on. Campus trips are the other crossing. NP students make up to three campus trips of one to three days, each set on the calendar six months or more beforehand, and the January 2027 session is mandatory for all NP tracks. From DeSoto County, the Memphis campus sits inside your own metro; from Jackson, Hattiesburg or the coast, plan lodging around each date. If I live in DeSoto County, can my UofM clinicals be in Memphis?
They can, provided the site gains clinical faculty approval and your RN license covers Tennessee practice, which a multistate license from the Mississippi board does through the compact. With the Memphis metro straddling both states, a Shelby County site can be the most local option you have. Ask your clinical faculty how they read local for your course.
Does Mississippi require approval before a UofM student trains there?
Mississippi puts that duty on the program rather than the student. Under IHL's approach, a school from another state with students training in Mississippi must satisfy Mississippi standards, clear a review by IHL's nursing education office and request it at least four months early. Check with LCON that its review covers Mississippi sites before you apply or plan a rotation there.
Is Mississippi on UofM's list of authorized states?
It is one of the 16 states on the partnerships office's authorized list, and the MSN licensure disclosure answers that UofM's three NP concentrations meet Mississippi requirements. Admission remains UofM's decision, so confirm your situation with LCON first.
What does reduced practice mean for a Mississippi NP preceptor?
Reduced practice, the AANP's label for Mississippi, means your NP preceptor partners with a Mississippi-licensed collaborating physician or dentist under a board-approved arrangement, and the clinic runs with that partnership in place. On top of that, UofM wants an NP as the preceptor for at least one rotation per NP track, a rule that travels with you into Mississippi.
