Which West Virginia office has a say
The West Virginia Board of Registered Nurses approves out-of-state pre-licensure programs through an application filed before those students use West Virginia facilities. Graduate programs fall outside its reach; the Board's out-of-state page tells them to consult WVHEPC and their national accreditor about clinical placements.
A WVHEPC office focused on nursing education and workforce development keeps a clinical rotation guide for schools based outside the state. For APRN and graduate programs, it names two situations that call for WVHEPC approval:
- the college or university is not an NC-SARA participant
- ten or more of its students are headed to one West Virginia site
According to UofM Global, UofM's online programs reach students beyond Tennessee under NC-SARA. How the guide applies to UofM is still LCON's to confirm.
UofM's marks for a West Virginia address
MSN practicums at UofM are in person and near home, so a West Virginian's clinicals would be West Virginia clinicals (local-area clinicals).

The RN license on a West Virginia rotation
West Virginia's RNs have practiced under the compact since its January 2018 start there. WVHEPC's guide ties the license to where the student lives: West Virginia residents in APRN or graduate clinicals carry a valid West Virginia RN license, and students whose primary residence is another compact state carry that state's multistate license. UofM wants you eligible to practice as an RN in Tennessee or in whichever approved state holds your clinical assignments, which lines up (RN license details).
Two of the state's metros cross borders: Huntington pairs with Ashland, Kentucky, and Martinsburg with Hagerstown, Maryland. A site across a state line brings another state's rules; clear it with LCON early.
Reduced practice and the prescribing limits
AANP sorts West Virginia into reduced practice. For the first three years of prescriptive practice, a new NP prescribes under a collaborative agreement with a physician, and Schedule II narcotic prescriptions are capped at three days' supply.
No APRN Compact law exists in West Virginia yet. UofM's disclosure adds that board-certified graduates may seek APRN licensure state by state, wherever they intend to practice.
Charleston, Morgantown, Huntington and the Eastern Panhandle
Charleston and Morgantown are the metros fully inside the state. Vandalia Health (the parent of CAMC, Mon Health and Davis Health), Marshall Health Network and WVU Medicine show the variety of settings; each is an example, not a UofM site.
UofM's rotation rules apply in every county. Every NP track needs a nurse practitioner as preceptor for one rotation or more; FNP students also need family practice time, and their closing residency must be in family practice or an internal medicine setting. Full detail: rotation rules.

Does the WV RN Board need to approve UofM for my NP clinicals?
Its jurisdiction ends at pre-licensure programs; graduate schools are told to check with WVHEPC and their own accreditor. Under WVHEPC's guide, approval becomes necessary for a graduate or APRN program based elsewhere only when the school is not in NC-SARA, or when a single site would host ten or more of its students. LCON can confirm how that plays out for UofM.
What RN license covers a UofM practicum in West Virginia?
It depends on your primary residence. WVHEPC's guide asks West Virginians to hold a valid license from their own state, and residents of other compact states to hold a multistate license. On UofM's side, the compliance list calls for an unrestricted RN license from Tennessee or from the approved state where you do your clinicals.
How often would I travel to Memphis for campus intensives?
UofM expects NP students in Memphis on as many as three occasions, one to three days apiece, with six months' notice or more. The January 2027 session is mandatory for every NP track. The intensives page shows which sessions your track requires.
Is West Virginia on UofM's list of authorized states?
