Alabama's rule for nursing programs based out of state
Of Tennessee's neighbors, Alabama is among the most hands-on. Its administrative code, rule 610-X-3-.09, tells an advanced practice program headquartered beyond Alabama's borders to send the Alabama Board of Nursing (ABN) a letter stating its intent, backed by proof of approval at home, with 15 days or more to spare before clinical learning opens in the state.
That packet is detailed. It identifies every student and supervising clinician along with their license numbers, names the facility, and includes a signed statement from that facility's nursing leadership. Per the ABN's own FAQ, no student starts Alabama clinicals before the Board signs off. The ABN pages researched showed no roster of programs already on file, so ask LCON whether it files for Alabama before you commit to a site.
Licenses and NP practice rules in Alabama
Alabama joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, implemented at the start of 2020. For clinicals inside Alabama, the ABN wants post-licensure students, MSN students among them, to carry a clean RN license issued by Alabama, or else a compact member's multistate license. Nurse practitioner licensure is separate. With the APRN Compact not enacted in Alabama, each state still issues its own NP license. AANP labels Alabama reduced practice: an NP's work rests on a state-regulated collaborative arrangement with a physician, and oversight is split between the nursing board and the Board of Medical Examiners. Every Alabama preceptor you meet practices within that arrangement.
A practicum close to home in Alabama
Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery are the state's biggest metros. USA Health and Infirmary Health in Mobile, Baptist Health in Montgomery, UAB Medicine and Huntsville Hospital Health System carry much of the state's care, though each keeps its own student rules; treat them as landmarks, not as sites open to UofM students. UofM's own sources, and the trip to campus
LCON's graduate residency page admits online students only from states where the college holds distance-education authorization and calls out California as the exception. It also asks anyone living outside Tennessee to verify the program suits their state's advanced licensure rules. Since Alabama is off the roster yet marked yes in the disclosures, only LCON can settle it.
NP students visit campus up to three times, for one to three days, with at least six months' notice, and every NP track attends the January 2027 session. UofM hasn't named the host campus: LCON's main building is in Memphis and its Lambuth campus is in Jackson. Is Alabama an authorized state for UofM's online MSN?
UofM gives two answers. Alabama is missing from the partnerships office's roster of 16 states, yet the MSN and certificate licensure disclosures say the NP tracks meet Alabama's requirements. Write to LCON before applying, name your track, and file the reply with your application papers.
Which RN license covers UofM clinicals in Alabama?
For clinicals in the state, the ABN looks for an unencumbered RN license from Alabama, or a multistate privilege that another compact state issued. A nurse whose primary residence is Alabama normally holds the Alabama multistate version, which also works in Tennessee.
Can an Alabama preceptor claim the state tax credit for a UofM student?
No. The Alabama Preceptor Tax Incentive Program is tied to programs physically located in Alabama, and UofM's nursing college is in Memphis. Alabama's statewide AHEC office administers it, and the state Department of Revenue shows it as open from tax year 2024.
How much lead time does an Alabama rotation need?
Two deadlines overlap. Alabama's board expects the program's letter of intent 15 or more days before clinical learning in the state, and UofM's Office of Community Partnerships and Practice must approve your preceptor agreement form ahead of your first clinical day.
