Iowa's conditions for schools based elsewhere
In Iowa, nurse licensing falls to a Board of Nursing seated in DIAL (Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing). It approves no program headquartered in another state, yet its criteria page lists what such a program is still expected to do in Iowa:
- obtain Iowa College Aid's permission to operate in the state
- honor Iowa law alongside the nursing rules of its home state
- hand the Board data whenever asked
- confirm that every faculty member and preceptor on Iowa soil holds an active Iowa or multistate license
- sign clinical contracts that divide responsibilities, leave student learning under faculty control, get reviewed annually and state how either side may exit
Whether that Iowa College Aid approval is in place for UofM is something to ask LCON by name.
Licenses, ARNP preceptors and practice
Iowa has honored compact licenses since January 2018. A licensed nurse studying at a higher level who trains in the state must hold an active Iowa or multistate license and follow Iowa Code, because Iowa's student exemption (Code 152.1) covers only students with no nursing license anywhere. An Iowa multistate license also reaches Tennessee, in line with UofM's license expectation (RN license guide).
Iowa calls its nurse practitioners ARNPs, and AANP places it among the full practice states. Iowa's rule for its in-state ARNP programs (481 IAC 616.16) puts the bulk of preceptorship time with ARNPs or physicians working in the student's own role and population focus, requires preceptors to be licensed where they work, and has written agreements revisited yearly. In Iowa, both the program and the clinical facility sign off on preceptors.
Iowa nurses who precept get renewal credit too: six contact hours for guiding a student through an organized preceptorship lasting 60 hours or more, once the school documents it.
Practicums from Des Moines to the Quad Cities
UofM delivers MSN coursework online and sets practicums in person, near your home. For Iowans that might be greater Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, or the Iowa half of the Davenport-Moline-Rock Island area.
Larger names include MercyOne, the University of Iowa's health care system and UnityPoint Health; they illustrate the market and are not offered as UofM sites. Check any setting against UofM's rotation rules: an NP preceptor at least once in every NP track, family practice for FNP students, and both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric settings for PMHNP students (rotation rules).

Questions UofM students ask
Does the Iowa Board of Nursing approve UofM's MSN?
No. Approving outside schools is simply not something the Iowa Board does, for UofM or anyone else. Instead it expects them to hold Iowa College Aid approval, follow Iowa law, use properly licensed faculty and preceptors, and put clinical arrangements in written contracts. Ask LCON whether those pieces are in place for students living in Iowa.
Can my Iowa preceptor be a physician?
Iowa's rule for its own ARNP programs allows preceptorship time with physicians as well as ARNPs, provided they work in the same role and population focus as the student. UofM adds its own requirement that at least one rotation in every NP track be precepted by a nurse practitioner. Whether a physician can take your other rotations is for UofM's clinical faculty to approve.
What does precepting give an Iowa nurse?
Iowa lets preceptors turn teaching into renewal credit. Sixty or more hours spent guiding a student in an organized preceptorship earns six contact hours of continuing education, provided the school documents it. For a busy ARNP, that makes precepting count toward the next renewal.
Is Iowa one of UofM's authorized states?
Iowa does not appear among the 16 states UofM's partnerships office names. The licensure disclosures for the MSN and NP certificates list Iowa as meeting requirements. Because the sources conflict, ask LCON for a written answer on Iowa before you apply.
