Kansas nurses and the UofM nurse practitioner program
In Kansas, the Board's scrutiny of an out-of-state APRN program arrives at the end, at the point one of its graduates asks Kansas for an APRN license, rather than at enrollment. So the useful comparison, KSBN's checklist against UofM's plan of study, is one to make now. UofM's sources also split on Kansas, absent from the partnerships office's 16 states but marked yes in the licensure disclosure, so confirm with LCON before applying.

What KSBN checks, and when
KSBN, the state's Board of Nursing, sets no approval hurdle for online APRN programs from outside Kansas before residents sign up. The program gets its look only once a graduate applies to Kansas for an APRN license, and at that point reviewers want to see:
- three credits or more in pharmacology, pathophysiology and health assessment, each at the advanced level
- no fewer than 45 credit hours across the program
- national accreditation for the program
- 750 hours in the role and specialty if you entered after March 1, 2025, or 500 if you entered before that date
Put those beside UofM's numbers. UofM's catalog lists the MSN FNP at 40 credits, the AG-ACNP at 44 and the PMHNP at 46, while its licensure disclosure marks Kansas as meeting requirements. Ask KSBN and LCON how credits are counted before you commit. On hours, UofM's catalog sets a 750-hour minimum for NP students, though some plan sheets print other figures (NP hours).
Kansas preceptors and the RN license you train on
Kansas sites come with preceptor conditions from KSBN. The preceptor is oriented to the program, puts a signature on an agreement, and is licensed by Kansas as an APRN in whatever role the student is learning; clinical supervision of APRN students hinges on that Kansas license. Online teaching faculty can stay licensed only in their home state, and Kansas asks for no faculty site visits, treating any faculty who stop by as visitors.
The student, meanwhile, practices on whichever RN license Kansas honors, multistate or a Kansas single-state card. Since July 2019 Kansas has taken part in the compact, and a Kansas multistate license also stretches to Tennessee, which lines up with UofM's rule on where you may work as an RN (license guide). Practicums close to home in Kansas
UofM's MSN pairs online study with in-person practicums in your own region. For Kansas that means the Kansas side of metro Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka and the Manhattan area.
Among the larger providers are Ascension Via Christi, Stormont Vail, The University of Kansas Health System, and Wesley Healthcare, an HCA hospital in Wichita. Keep UofM's rotation rules in view as you search: FNP students need family practice time and a residency in family practice or internal medicine, and AG-ACNP students need a preceptor with inpatient practice.

Questions UofM students ask
Does KSBN have to approve UofM before I enroll?
No. KSBN states that online APRN programs from outside Kansas need no Board approval ahead of enrollment by Kansas residents. It examines the program later, once you file for a Kansas APRN license as a graduate. That timing is why it pays to compare KSBN's checklist with UofM's plan of study before you start rather than after you finish.
Can my Kansas preceptor be licensed in Missouri?
Not for a Kansas site. There, KSBN looks for a preceptor who carries Kansas APRN licensure in your role, so a Missouri-only license falls short. If you train on the Missouri side of the metro instead, Missouri's rules govern that site. Either way, UofM still requires at least one rotation precepted by a nurse practitioner.
Will UofM faculty visit my Kansas site?
Kansas itself requires no faculty visits during clinicals and treats any visiting faculty as guests. UofM's expectation is separate: its clinical faculty make a final clinical visit that counts as your performance evaluation. How that visit works for students outside Tennessee is a question for your clinical faculty.
Can Kansas residents apply to UofM's online MSN?
UofM's sources disagree. Kansas does not appear on the partnerships office's 16-state list, yet the MSN and NP certificate disclosures record it as meeting requirements, and UofM Global cites SARA. Only LCON can settle which applies to you, so get its answer before you apply.
