Louisiana ranks among the more demanding states for online programs: its Board of Nursing has to clear a nursing school run from another state, graduate programs included, before that school's students train in Louisiana. UofM's own sources also pull in two directions here, leaving Louisiana off the partnerships office's 16 states while the licensure disclosure says yes. Raise both points with LCON before you apply.

LSBN's gate for programs run from other states
Rule LAC 46:XLVII.3539 applies to undergraduate and graduate nursing programs whose administrative home lies outside Louisiana. Before offering a course or a clinical experience in the state, such a program files a request with the Louisiana State Board of Nursing half a year or more ahead, with a package that includes:
- a cover letter naming the agencies and the specific units it will use
- curriculum, syllabi and the school catalog
- a completed clinical facility survey and forms documenting faculty qualifications
- its NCLEX and certification exam pass figures
LSBN also expects the school to be approved in its own state, regionally accredited, and accredited by a national nursing body the Board accepts. Once granted, approval can last up to three years, with renewal by petition. Ask LCON whether UofM holds that approval before you build plans around a Louisiana practicum.
What the rule asks once a rotation starts
Approval is the beginning, not the end. The Board wants its clinical experience spreadsheet for every graduate student within fourteen days of the start date. Any of the school's faculty teaching on Louisiana soil need a Louisiana RN or APRN license, graduate preparation in nursing, and a clinical track record of two years or longer.
In a precepted clinical, program faculty talk with preceptor and student weekly at minimum and make at least one site visit each semester or quarter. For APRN students in a Board-approved preceptorship, the ratio tops out at one faculty member to nine students on any clinical day.
Your license and NP practice in Louisiana
Louisiana began honoring the Nurse Licensure Compact in July 2019. A Louisiana multistate RN license covers practicums at home and carries over to Tennessee, so one license answers UofM's requirement for both Tennessee and your Louisiana clinical sites (RN license guide).
AANP classes Louisiana as reduced practice, which means at least one piece of every Louisiana NP's practice runs through a physician collaboration agreement the state regulates.

Does Louisiana's Board rule cover graduate NP programs?
Yes. The rule names graduate programs alongside undergraduate ones whenever administrative control sits outside Louisiana, and it requires LSBN approval before courses or clinical experiences are offered in the state. A Tennessee-based online MSN with Louisiana practicums falls within that wording, which is why LCON's answer matters so much here.
Does a Louisiana multistate license meet UofM's rule?
It should cover the license side: a multistate license from Louisiana is valid at Louisiana sites and, through the compact, in Tennessee. UofM's graduate rules list losing an unencumbered RN license among the grounds for disqualification, so keep yours in good standing from admission to graduation.
Does UofM enroll Louisiana residents?
UofM's pages give mixed signals. The partnerships office names 16 authorized states without Louisiana, while the licensure PDFs for the MSN and the NP certificates answer yes for it, and UofM Global cites SARA. Add Louisiana's Board approval step, and the case for a clear answer from LCON before applying is strong.
Which Louisiana health systems take UofM students?
No list of Louisiana sites for UofM students is published here, and names like Ochsner or LCMC Health are examples of the market only. Any site must agree to host you, and the preceptor agreement form needs approval from UofM's partnerships office before clinicals begin, on top of whatever LSBN requires.
