Timing is the New Mexico rule to watch. Once a school's clinical presence in the state outlasts one semester, the Board expects the placements to be approved, and UofM's NP practicums span several courses. Add UofM's split answer on New Mexico residents, and LCON is the first call to make.

The longer-than-a-semester trigger
Section 16.12.3.11 NMAC puts it directly: when clinicals or field hours in New Mexico continue into a second semester, the school applies for Board approval of that placement. A school approved by another state's board must also clear the baseline requirements found in section 16.12.3.12.
The surrounding rules speak to schools preparing nurses for New Mexico licensure. Nurse practitioner and RN to BSN programs are never singled out, which leaves the rule's grip on graduate study an open question. The calendar math is simpler: each UofM NP track carries three or four practicum courses, so New Mexico clinicals would likely stretch well past one term. Ask LCON whether it holds New Mexico approval or plans to apply.

Licenses, preceptors and practice authority
Multistate licenses have been available from the New Mexico Board since the state's compact membership began in January 2018. Tennessee participates too, so a New Mexico multistate license satisfies what UofM asks of MSN applicants: the right to practice nursing in Tennessee or in the state, once approved, where their practicums happen (license rules).
The Board's rules also set a floor for preceptors: two years' experience at minimum, plus licensure at the student's intended level or a higher one. In NP terms, think of a seasoned APRN. UofM itself insists on one or more NP-led rotations; if another rotation would use a different kind of preceptor, ask LCON how New Mexico's standard applies. Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Santa Fe and Farmington
Albuquerque's metro holds far more people than any other in the state, with Las Cruces in the south, Santa Fe to the north and Farmington in the northwest. The University of New Mexico's health system, which runs New Mexico's single academic medical center, is one example of the settings; so are Lovelace Health System, Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Santa Fe's CHRISTUS St. Vincent. None is described here as a UofM partner.
Rotation rules travel with you. AG-ACNP students train with a preceptor who cares for inpatients, in clinic, hospital or critical care settings alike (AG-ACNP program). FNP students also owe a family practice rotation, and their residency belongs in family practice or internal medicine.

Does New Mexico's semester rule apply to UofM graduate students?
The trigger is clinical work in New Mexico that continues beyond a semester, and UofM's NP practicums normally run longer. Whether graduate programs fall under it is not spelled out, because the rules address schools whose graduates seek New Mexico licensure. LCON is the office to ask.
Will my New Mexico license work for UofM's program?
A multistate New Mexico license covers practicums at home and extends to Tennessee, which fits UofM's RN rule. Guard its standing for the full plan of study: in UofM's graduate catalog, losing an unencumbered RN license is one of the grounds for disqualification.
Who can precept a UofM NP student in New Mexico?
New Mexico wants preceptors with two-plus years of experience whose licensure matches or exceeds what the student will hold. UofM layers on its own rule: one rotation or more under a nurse practitioner. The rotation rules page lists UofM's other requirements.
How often will a New Mexico student need to be on campus?
UofM asks NP students to come to campus up to three times, each visit one to three days long, with at least six months' notice. Every NP track must attend the January 2027 session, so book travel from Albuquerque or elsewhere well ahead.
Is New Mexico among UofM's authorized states?
LCON's partnerships office publishes 16 authorized states without New Mexico among them, while UofM Global's disclosures for the MSN and NP certificates answer yes. Since the two disagree, a written answer from LCON on New Mexico should come before your application.
