South Carolina residents studying UofM's MSN
UofM's paperwork is fairly consistent about South Carolina: the partnerships office counts it among 16 authorized states, and the licensure disclosures mark the NP tracks yes. When South Carolina's Board screens schools from other states, it looks at those preparing students for a first license. Regulation 91-6 and who it covers
Under Regulation 91-6, a nursing program whose parent school is outside South Carolina needs Board approval before running in-state clinicals for students not yet licensed. Its home state must hold it on full approval, a nursing faculty member with a South Carolina or other compact-state license must supervise directly, on site and on shift, a written affiliation agreement must exist, and preceptorships follow South Carolina's rules. It then has 15 days to report, in writing, any compliance change.
Nothing in the regulation mentions APRN or RN-to-BSN programs, and every UofM NP student already holds an RN license. Confirm the details with LCON instead of reading the silence as an answer.

UofM's residency page still asks every student living outside Tennessee to check that an advanced-licensure program meets their home state's rules, and UofM's broader statements on state coverage do not line up. The state authorization guide explains where they part.
Licenses and physician practice agreements
South Carolina has handed out multistate licenses since January 2018, and Tennessee shares the compact. A multistate card from either state therefore covers UofM's expectation of RN eligibility in Tennessee or the approved state where you complete clinicals (RN license rules).
On AANP's scale South Carolina is restricted: NPs carry out delegated acts only under a signed agreement with a physician, and controlled-substance supplies are capped. UofM's requirement sits on top of that. At least one rotation in every NP track has to be precepted by a nurse practitioner (rotation rules).
A preceptor credit tied to South Carolina schools
S.C. Code ยง 12-6-3800 gives certain preceptors, physicians, APRNs and PAs among them, a state income tax credit plus a deduction for extra rotations, and Act No. 217 of 2024 carried it through tax year 2029. Eligible preceptors participate in Medicaid at a set patient volume and take on at least two 160-hour rotations annually.
The credit is limited to rotations for students of South Carolina colleges, public or independent, so a UofM rotation falls outside it.
From Greenville to Charleston
UofM runs MSN practicums in person, close to each student's home. Census estimates for 2025 put about 1.01 million people in the Greenville-Anderson-Greer metro, around 889,000 in Charleston's and about 880,000 in Columbia's, with some 454,000 South Carolinians in the Charlotte metro. Systems in the state include Prisma Health, McLeod Health, MUSC Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare and Lexington Health, named for scale only and not as sites committed to UofM students.
NP students also plan for up to three short trips to campus; the January 2027 intensive is required for every NP track (campus intensives).

Does South Carolina's Board need to approve UofM before my NP practicum?
Regulation 91-6 sets an approval step for outside programs leading students to a first license, and APRN programs go unmentioned. UofM's NP students are licensed RNs pursuing advanced practice, so the rule's text does not reach them directly. Ask LCON whether it takes any South Carolina step before your first rotation.
Would precepting me earn a South Carolina NP the state's preceptor credit?
No. It applies only to rotations for students of South Carolina colleges, public or independent, and UofM is based in Tennessee. The credit also carries Medicaid participation and rotation-count conditions, so a preceptor weighing it should read the state code.
Is South Carolina on UofM's authorized list?
Yes. The Office of Community Partnerships and Practice names South Carolina among its 16 states, and UofM's MSN and certificate disclosures agree for the NP tracks. Admission is still UofM's decision, and its state sources conflict in other places, so get LCON's confirmation before you apply.
Can a South Carolina physician precept part of my UofM FNP hours?
UofM requires at least one FNP rotation precepted by a nurse practitioner, one in family practice, and a residency in family practice or internal medicine.
