Nurse educator immersions at UofM: NURS 7207 and NURS 7209
UofM's MSN in Nursing Education has two precepted immersion courses: NURS 7207 Nurse Educator Immersion 1 at 120 hours and NURS 7209, the 240-hour Roles and Transition to Practice Residency. The second must happen at a different site from the first, so every education student needs two separate placements. Whether UofM helps arrange your immersions or not, we find nurse educator preceptors for both and prepare their details for approval.

The two immersions and the lab before them
The Nursing Education concentration carries 19 specialty credits inside a 31-credit MSN. Most of them are online didactic courses: NURS 7204 Curriculum Design and Educational Theory, NURS 7205 Evaluation Methods in Nursing Education and NURS 7206 Teaching Methods for Nurse Educators. The precepted work sits in two immersion courses.

NURS 7106 pairs with NURS 7105, and the catalog lets students replace both with the NP-track courses NURS 7101 through NURS 7104. Both immersions need a B or better; the certificate's catalog page ties the B to all clinical and lab courses, and the grades and progression guide covers what a repeat means.
When the immersions fall
Full-time or part-time, the MSN plans schedule NURS 7207 for spring. Fall starters reach it in their second term; spring starters wait until their fourth. NURS 7209 follows in a later term as the capstone. For a fall starter, that means the first preceptor has to be in place only a few months after classes begin.
The Nursing Education graduate certificate, at 15 credits, runs on the same timing for fall starters. Its spring-start plan is unusual: it skips a term labeled three and places NURS 7207 and NURS 7209 in the same term. Because education students may not return to a previous site for the residency, a certificate student on that plan could need two preceptors at two sites during a single semester. A different site for the residency
The LCON Academic Bulletin leaves no room here: an education student's residency happens somewhere new. NP and Leadership students are allowed a familiar site for their final course, but Nursing Education students are not, so the NURS 7209 placement is always a fresh search.
That rule changes how we plan. Rather than lining up one immersion and worrying about the second later, we look for two sites at once, each with its own nurse educator preceptor, so the residency search never starts from zero in the term before it runs.
Both placements follow the approval path of any MSN clinical. Each needs its own preceptor agreement form cleared by LCON's partnerships office ahead of day one, and each term's schedule goes to clinical faculty early in the second week.
Nursing Education students may not reuse their NURS 7207 site for NURS 7209, so plan two sites from the start.
Where UofM's documents disagree
Two conflicts affect education students. The first is the hour total. Immersion 1 plus the residency make 360 hours, matching the specialty line of the bulletin's hours table. Yet that table's program line says 500, and nothing UofM has posted accounts for the gap of 140.
The second is course order. The catalog entry for NURS 7207 expects every non-practicum education course to be done first, yet the published plans schedule NURS 7207 ahead of some of those courses, such as NURS 7204 or the NURS 7105 and NURS 7106 pair.
For tie-breaking, the 2026-27 catalog and the bulletin outweigh the older PDFs, and the Education and Leadership track coordinator rules on anything they leave open. Ask about both points before registering for the first immersion. The clinical hours overview sets the education figures beside every other UofM program.
What we look for in a nurse educator preceptor
UofM's public pages give the immersions credits and hours but no required setting, and the bulletin refers to preceptor qualifications without spelling them out. Your course faculty's expectations lead, and within them we look for experienced educators who teach nurses or nursing students regularly: faculty in academic nursing programs, clinical educators in hospital education or professional development departments, and staff development leaders who run orientation and competency programs.

We also check the second site against the first, so the residency preceptor offers a different setting from Immersion 1. Questions UofM students ask
Can I complete my education immersion at the hospital where I work?
Hours at the organization that employs you now are off the table under UofM's bulletin unless compelling circumstances prevail, and in that case faculty and program administration approve the placement and keep a record of it. Many education students work in hospitals with education departments, so ask your clinical faculty before planning around your employer. The workplace clinicals guide explains the request.
Do Nursing Education students attend on-campus intensives?
The on-campus sessions UofM lists are for NP students. The MSN page shows none for Nursing Education, and the bulletin says every MSN course runs online. If a course did add a campus day, its Canvas syllabus would say so, so read each one in the first week of term.
Is NURS 7106 a precepted clinical?
The catalog calls NURS 7106 a laboratory practicum paired with NURS 7105, the advanced assessment, pharmacology and pathophysiology course for nurse educators. UofM does not publish its hours or say whether it uses an outside preceptor. Students who take NURS 7101 through 7104 instead follow the NP-track version, including the NURS 7102 clinical.
Does the Nursing Education certificate include both immersions?
Yes. The 15-credit certificate includes NURS 7207 and NURS 7209 at 120 and 240 hours. The certificate also requires advanced assessment, pharmacology and pathophysiology, through NURS 7105 and 7106 or NURS 7101 through 7104. Its spring-start plan puts both immersions in one term, so confirm the timing before the term.
