New Jersey clinicals for University of Memphis nursing students
For a UofM student, New Jersey's own rules look manageable. Its nurses have carried compact licenses since late 2021, and research turned up no Board requirement that an outside school file anything before its students train in the state. What needs settling is UofM's answer, because one UofM source leaves New Jersey out while another says yes.

Reading UofM's sources from New Jersey
UofM publishes more than one answer about where online students may live, and New Jersey falls on both sides of the split.

A graduate student living outside Tennessee is also told, on UofM's residency page, to check the program against their own state's APRN licensure rules. State authorization sets UofM's sources next to each other.
Compact license, collaborative prescribing
New Jersey began honoring compact licenses in November 2021, and Tennessee is a member as well. A New Jersey multistate license therefore clears UofM's license bar, which asks for RN standing in Tennessee or in an approved state where the practicum runs (license rules).
On AANP's scale New Jersey is reduced practice. When a New Jersey NP orders a drug or a device, a set of joint protocols agreed with a collaborating physician sits behind that order, so expect those protocols to shape your preceptor's prescribing. UofM, for its part, wants every NP track to include a rotation under an NP.
What the Board's rules say about schools from elsewhere
Nursing in New Jersey is regulated by a Board that sits under the Division of Consumer Affairs. Subchapter 1 of its education rules (N.J.A.C. 13:37) is about accrediting programs at institutions that New Jersey's higher education commission licenses. The single clause touching clinical agencies across state lines, 13:37-1.10(c), is about New Jersey programs sending students outward, the opposite direction.
Research found no rule obliging a school like UofM to obtain approval, or even send notice, ahead of its students' first New Jersey clinical day. The Board's own web pages were out of reach during research, so any guidance posted there went unchecked. It is a fair question for LCON whether anything is on file for New Jersey practicums.
North Jersey, South Jersey and the capital region
Roughly seven million people live on the New Jersey side of the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro. South Jersey belongs to the Philadelphia metro, Camden and Wilmington included, while Trenton-Princeton and Atlantic City-Hammonton form two smaller metros of their own.
Hackensack Meridian Health, RWJBarnabas Health, Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health and, in Camden, Cooper University Health Care show how large the market is. None is presented here as a site open to UofM students. FNP plans need family practice time plus a residency set in family practice or internal medicine, and AG-ACNP practicums call for a preceptor whose work reaches inpatient care (rotation rules).

Questions UofM students ask
Is a New Jersey RN license enough for UofM's MSN?
A multistate New Jersey license covers practicums in New Jersey and reaches Tennessee as well, which satisfies UofM's RN rule. Keep it unrestricted throughout, because a lapse or restriction would disqualify you under UofM's graduate rules.
Does New Jersey make UofM register before my practicum starts?
No such requirement surfaced in New Jersey's nursing rules, which address in-state programs and their own students going elsewhere. The Board's site could not be checked, though, so ask LCON whether it has anything on record for New Jersey before you commit to a site.
Could my practicum be across the river in Philadelphia or New York City?
Practicums are meant to be local to you, and each state's rules follow the site. New York insists that programs from other states hold registration with its education department before they place students, so a New York site adds checks; see the New York guide. When should a New Jersey NP student line up a preceptor?
Plan backward from Spring, when UofM schedules each NP track's opening practicum: roughly twelve months into a Spring-start plan and seventeen into a Fall-start one. Spring 2027 students should have a preceptor in hand during Fall 2026, leaving room for the preceptor agreement form's approval before day one.
