Washington State practicums for University of Memphis NP students
Few states guard the door as firmly as Washington. A distance program from another state must first be approved by WABON, the Washington State Board of Nursing, before one of its students starts a Washington clinical. UofM, meanwhile, omits Washington from its 16-state authorized roster while its disclosures mark the state yes, so ask LCON about WABON approval for your track before you apply.

WABON approval comes first
Look to WAC 246-840-571. A school outside Washington that teaches at a distance files an application with WABON, and only once approved may it place students in Washington clinicals or practice experiences. Keeping that approval means the school:
- demonstrates that its program is equivalent to Washington's own education standards
- supervises and evaluates its students on the ground in Washington
- holds national accreditation without a lapse and sends WABON annual reports
- assigns faculty with a Washington ARNP license to teach ARNP practice in the state
WABON's approved roster spans RN-BSN, MSN and NP tracks. Approval covers Washington residents only, and WABON decides exceptions individually. The online roster showed no school names when checked, so UofM's standing is unconfirmed; LCON can answer it.
How UofM's own sources mark Washington
UofM's MSN clinicals are "in-person clinical practicums in your local area", so for a Washington resident everything turns on Washington practicums (what local area means).

Who can precept an ARNP student in Washington
Washington's title for a nurse practitioner is ARNP. Its education rules accept three license types for an ARNP student's preceptor: ARNP, MD and DO, from Washington or an equivalent elsewhere, in active and unencumbered status. A second condition rules out anyone who is the student's relative or personal friend, so the family friend with a clinic is not an option.
UofM then adds its own layer: a nurse practitioner precepts at least one rotation in every NP track, and FNP students complete a family practice rotation. Details sit on the rotation rules page.
Licensing, practice climate and rules in motion
Washington became a compact state for RNs on January 31, 2024, and AANP lists it with the full practice states. The APRN Compact has not been adopted there. UofM's MSN asks for RN eligibility in Tennessee or in the approved state where your clinicals happen, which for someone living in Washington means a Washington license (license rules).
Two moving parts deserve watching. On December 5, 2025 WABON started rulemaking with a CR-101 notice, and removing obstacles to clinical placement is among its stated aims, so today's details may shift. Washington's state preceptor grant also excludes out-of-state programs, regardless of where the clinical hours occur.

Does UofM have WABON approval for Washington clinicals?
UofM's public pages do not say, and WABON's online program list displayed no school names when it was checked on September 27, 2026. Since WAC 246-840-571 makes approval a precondition for any out-of-state distance program's Washington placements, get a clear answer from LCON before applying.
Could a relative or close friend be my Washington preceptor?
Washington's rules say no. Anyone related to you, or a personal friend, is barred from precepting an ARNP student. The preceptor instead needs an ARNP, MD or DO credential (Washington's or another state's) that is active and unencumbered. That keeps evaluations at arm's length.
I live in Idaho and work in Spokane. Could I train in Washington?
WABON's approval of an out-of-state program covers students who reside in Washington, and exceptions get individual review. UofM frames MSN practicums around your local area, so an Idaho resident would usually start with Idaho's rules; see the Idaho guide and raise any cross-border idea with LCON.
